Church of St. Olha and St. Elizabeth: Neo-Gothic Spires

The Church of St. Olha and St. Elizabeth is Lviv’s only Neo-Gothic building. If you arrive by train you can’t miss its imposing spires that are visible from Lviv’s Central Railway Station. Originally named St. Elizabeth’s Church, the building was designed by a Polish architect and built in the years 1903-1911 as the parish church for the city’s the western suburb.

A bombing raid in 1939 damaged St. Elizabeth’s, which remained open and later served as a warehouse in the postwar years. The church was given new life in 1991 and when it began operating as Greek Catholic church with the new name Church of Saint Olha and Saint Elizabeth.

The Church of St. Olha and St. Elizabeth is a bit outside Lviv’s center on Kropyvnytskoho Street, a 10-minute walk from the Central Railway Station. From the center, it’s best to get there by taxi – just tell your driver “Do tserkvy Yelyzavety”; it will take you 10-15 minutes and cost about 72 UAH (2.5 EURO).
